Nanocrowd & Letterboxd Help You Decide Which Oscar-Nominated Films to Watch First

By Roderic March, 02/24/2023

The Oscar nominations are in, and we’re all waiting for March 12th to see if our favorites win. If you’re like me, you do a sprint before the Oscars to try and watch all of the ones you missed. But how do you decide which one to watch first? That’s where Nanocrowd & Letterboxd come in. You can use Letterboxd powered by Nanocrowd to help you choose the Oscar-nominated feature films you’ll love to watch.

Recently, Letterboxd partnered with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to collaborate on exclusive digital content related to the Oscars®, starting with the Nominees Luncheon and featuring nominees reading the best Letterboxd reviews of their films. Letterboxd also hosts nominees on “The Letterboxd Show” podcast throughout the awards season and presents an Oscars-themed series of Showdowns, including the Best Picture Showdown.

Letterboxd partnered with Nanocrowd in 2022 to integrate our recommendation technology. As a result, Letterboxd recently added a new feature based on Nanocrowd analytics: “Sort by Your Interests.” So if you have a Letterboxd account and marked titles you liked, this new feature lets you sort any movie list at Letterboxd – putting your recommended titles at the top.

Letterboxd Is a Great Place to Start Reviewing the Academy’s List of Oscar-Nominated Films

The Academy created a list of all 39 oscar-nominated feature films on Letterboxd. By default, this list is sorted alphabetically, which doesn't give you much guidance on the movies to watch first.

How You Get a Sorted List of the Oscar-Nominated Films Based on Your Interests

If you have a Letterboxd account and marked some titles you liked, you simply select “Based on films you liked.” Letterboxd reorders the Academy’s alphabetical list using your liked titles and Nanocrowd data.

For example, my reordered list below is very different and looks more enticing now that it's sorted for me. I've watched or want to watch almost all the titles at the top, and the titles at the bottom are mostly unfamiliar. So my new list matched my taste and gave me several new titles to watch.

How Do You Know Letterboxd Understands Your Film Taste?

I tested my new “Based on films you liked” list using the Letterboxd feature to mark titles I've watched. The list below shows how well my new list was sorted based on my taste. The faded titles are ones I already watched, and they’re almost all in the top two rows. And in the bottom five rows, there are no titles I've watched – so the new list matched my taste and recommended titles I haven't seen.

How Different Are Letterboxd “Based on Your Interests” Lists?

We asked another team member, Doug Millasich, to sort the Academy’s list based on the movies he marked as "liked" at Letterboxd.

The Academy-nominated film list is in a different order for Doug and me because we like very different movies. Even though Doug hasn't watched the top 5 titles in his list, his watched titles are all in the top half – showing how well his new list was sorted based on his taste. Doug said he's "definitely interested in checking out the top 5 recommendations."
